What is VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) Panel?

Overview

VFD Panel, also known as Variable Frequency Drive Panel, is an electrical control panel that is designed to control the speed of electric motors and feed pumps. It is widely used in various industries, including drilling, pumping, conveyors, compressors, and other large machine applications.

How Does VFD Panel Work?

VFD Panels control the speed of AC motors by converting the fixed voltage, fixed frequency input power to a variable voltage, and variable frequency output. It is done by using a power conversion device that provides precise control over the motor speed. The VFD Panel is responsible for maintaining the speed of the motor at a constant level, even in case of input and load disturbances.

Why VFD Panels are Important?

VFD Panels offer two main features that make them a powerful controller for AC motors. The first feature is adjustable speeds, which allows for accurate and precise control applications. The second feature is soft start/stop capabilities, which reduces thermal and mechanical stress on motors and belt drives.

Benefits of VFD Panels

Aside from adjustable speeds and soft start/stop capabilities, VFD Panels offer various benefits in terms of process control and energy conservation. Some of these benefits are:

  • Energy Saving: VFD Panels conserve a significant amount of energy, especially in industries where more than 65% of the power is consumed by electric motors. Magnitude and frequency control techniques to vary the speed consume less power when variable speed is required by the motor.
  • Closed Loop Controlling: VFD Panels allow accurate positioning of the motor speed by continuously comparing it with the reference speed even at changes in the loading conditions and input disturbances like voltage fluctuations.
  • Limits Starting Current: Compared to conventional starters, VFD Panels deliver low frequency at the time of starting, which limits the starting current of the motor.
  • Smooth Operation: VFD Panels offer smooth operations at starting and stopping, reducing thermal and mechanical stress on motors and belt drives.
  • High Power Factor: Inbuilt power factor correction circuit in the DC link of VFD Panels reduces the need for additional power factor correction devices.
  • Easy Installation: Pre-programmed and factory wired VFD Panels offer an easy way for connection and maintenance.
